How it works

From the car park to a report
in your own words

This page is the app in full, with nothing held back for the sales pitch: what happens to a note from the moment you record it, what the AI is allowed to see, and what you can delete afterwards.

By Mike, a grassroots football coach in London. Reflective Lens is independent and not part of the FA.

The session, step by step

  1. 1

    Start a session, or don’t

Open the app and pick what you are doing: Training, Match, Tournament, Other, or Self when the reflection is about you rather than the team. You also say the format you play, from 3v3 up to 11v11. That one detail shapes the questions you get later, because set pieces and offside mean nothing at 5v5. Nothing else about your squad goes anywhere near a model.
  2. 2

Leave the note while it is fresh

Hold Record and talk. Slide your thumb away and it cancels, so a pocket or a change of mind costs nothing. Type it instead if the weather or the noise suits that better. The recording is written to your phone first and uploaded when there is signal, so a dead spot at the ground does not lose it.
  3. 3

Attach it now, or leave it for later

A note lands against the session you have open. If you were not in a session, it saves as a standalone thought, and you can attach it to a session afterwards. Your Thoughts list holds every note in one place, where you can search it, move it, or delete the one you wish you had not said.
  4. 4

    Answer up to three questions

The app asks up to three, one at a time, and every one is skippable. They are built from what you said and the format you play, and they point at what you hoped to see rather than at a rating. Take ten minutes in the car, or one question on the bus, and it is done.
  5. 5

Read the report in your own words

You get one short report for the session, written back to you from your own note. Where your note did not cover something, the report says so instead of inventing an answer. Nothing is marked out of ten, and nothing is graded against anyone else’s session.

Five steps, and the one that matters most is the second. Everything else exists to make that ten minutes happen.

Over the weeks

One session report tells you about one session. The value shows up when the notes stack up, so the app keeps two more views running in the background.

  • Block reports for a week, a month or the whole season, grouping what keeps coming back across your notes rather than listing them again.
  • Mirror view, a timeline of everything you have written, so you can see what you thought in September against what you think now.
  • Analytics on the habit itself: how often you reflect, which session types you skip, how long your notes run. It measures your practice, never your players.

What happens to your words

Your note goes through an AI service to write the summary, the questions and the report. That is the only place it goes, and what it is allowed to see is deliberately narrow.

What it sees

  • What you said or typed, in your own words.
  • The format you play, so the questions fit the game.
  • First names, only if you use them yourself.

What it never sees

  • Age group. It changes what a reasonable session looks like, so it stays out of the model’s reach and out of your report.
  • Your player list, squad registration or club.
  • Anything that would put a named child in front of a model.

Notes stay inside your account. Your club, your players’ families and other coaches get nothing unless you copy or download something and send it yourself. You choose how long notes are kept, from 12 to 60 months, and anything past that window is purged. You can export everything, delete a single note, or delete your account and take all of it with you.

On your phone

The app installs like any other app: open it in your browser and choose Add to home screen. The icon opens straight to a big Record button, so the note happens before the cones are back in the bag.

  • Hold the icon for a moment and you get two choices: record now, or open the app.
  • Recording works with no signal, and the queue uploads itself when you are back.
  • You can also ask your phone’s assistant to open Reflective Lens and start recording, for the times both hands are full of kit.

What it costs

The first month is free and needs no card. After that it is £3.99 a month or £35.90 a year. You can cancel up to the end of the period you have paid for, and if you stop paying the app goes read-only rather than locking you out: you can still read your history, export it, or delete it.

Try it on your next session

One month free, no card, and a note that takes less time than carrying the cones.
